Turn website visitors into text subscribers

Add a one-tap “Join our SMS list” button for phone visitors and a QR code for desktop visitors. Either way, the visitor’s messaging app opens with your number and keyword already filled in, and one tap on Send makes them a subscriber.

One tap on a phone
The button opens the visitor’s Messages app with your number and keyword ready to send.

A scan on a computer
Desktop visitors can’t text from a browser, so they scan your QR code with their phone instead.

Every keyword has its own
Each opt-in keyword gets its own button code and QR code, so you can send website sign-ups to the right list.

Before you start

You need an approved SMS phone number and at least one opt-in keyword. Both are set up under Engage Subscribers > SMS/MMS. The keyword is the word a subscriber texts you (for example JOIN), and it decides which list they land on.

Find your button and QR code

  1. In the left menu, open Engage Subscribers, then SMS/MMS, then Audience, then Opt-In Keywords.
  2. Find the keyword you want website visitors to join, and click its Keyword Tools button.
  3. A window opens with two tools side by side: the button on the left, the QR code on the right.

Add the button for phone visitors

The left side of Keyword Tools shows a short piece of code and a preview of the button (“Join our SMS List!”).

  1. Click Copy to Clipboard.
  2. Send the code to whoever looks after your website, or paste it into your site builder’s “custom code” or “HTML” block, exactly where you want the button to appear.
  3. Open your site on a phone to check it. The button only shows on phones, so you won’t see it on a computer.

Your web person can restyle the button to match your site; the technical details are in the SMS opt-in button reference on our developer site.

Add the QR code for computer visitors

The right side of Keyword Tools shows your QR code.

  1. Choose PNG or SVG and click Download Barcode. SVG stays sharp at any size.
  2. Add the image to your site, near the button or in your footer.
  3. Scan it with your phone to check that your Messages app opens with your number and keyword.

The code is plain black and white on purpose, so it still scans when it’s shrunk down.

On Wix?

Wix needs two small pieces instead of the copied code.

  1. Add an Embed HTML element where you want the button, give it the ID iframeHiddenSmsSignupButton, and paste this in, replacing the two values in brackets with your SMS number and keyword:
<button onclick="WalletSmsButton('[YOUR NUMBER HERE]', '[YOUR KEYWORD HERE]');">Join our SMS List!</button>
<script>
  var WalletSmsButton = function (number, body) {
    var ua = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();
    var url = (ua.indexOf("iphone") > -1 || ua.indexOf("ipad") > -1)
      ? "sms:" + number + "&body=" + body
      : "sms:" + number + "?body=" + body;
    window.open(url);
  }
</script>
  1. In your site’s masterPage.js, add this so the button only shows on phones:
import wixWindow from 'wix-window';
if (wixWindow.formFactor === "Mobile") {
  $w("#iframeHiddenSmsSignupButton").show();
} else {
  $w("#iframeHiddenSmsSignupButton").hide();
}
  1. Click Wix’s Preview and switch between desktop and mobile views: the button should appear on mobile only.

Good to know

Show the button to phones and the QR code to computers. A phone visitor can’t scan a code on their own screen, and a computer can’t send a text. Showing each the right one gets you the most sign-ups.

The keyword decides the list. Use the button and QR code from the keyword whose list you want website visitors on. If you change keywords later, update the code on your site too.

Help desk version. Your SMS number also has a support button and QR code, under Phone Numbers > Help Desk Tools. It works the same way but starts a help desk conversation instead of a sign-up.

Why it matters

Your website already has the audience. Most visitors leave and never come back. A one-tap sign-up turns a passing visit into a subscriber you can reach next week, and it costs them a single tap on Send.
